The idea for Kingsway School started in the mid 1980's with one person recognising a desperate need in their neighborhood, and having the courage to step out in faith and do something about it.

Context

The vast proportion of South African youth are not receiving the type of educational opportunities that they will need in order to develop into responsible, contributing and equipped members of society. The levels of poverty that hinder many of our young people, as well as the shortages of quality primary educational institutions within peri-urban areas, are two of the leading reasons for the establishment of Kingsway School, and Kingsway Centre of Concern.

Disadvantaged children in the Honeydew are of Johannesburg area lacking the type of educational support that takes into account their whole person in a nurturing, committed and stable environment. This is the gap that Kingsway seeks to address

How did Kingsway Start?

In 1986, a group of concerned people realized just how many children there were in their area spending their lives on the streets, with little or no prospect of leading a better life. Stemming from the desire to help these children, the project was initially started in someone's garage.

In those early days of Kingsway, there were only seven children. Today Kingsway has evolved into a bustling little school catering for over 270 children from Grade 00 to Grade seven, in classes averaging  twenty
five children.
